Tip #1: Tell other people about your goal.

If you tell others when you will quit smoking, then you will will be more motivated and committed. You want to make sure you are surrounded by people with positive attitudes who want to see you succeed.

You don’t want to tell every single person you know as those with negative attitudes and a pessimistic outlook may actually hold you back. So, choose the people wisely in terms of who to tell when you quit smoking cigarettes.

Tip #2: Know exactly why you want to quit.

Take some time off to reflect on the deep reason that you want to stop smoking. Initially, you may say that you want to quit just for health reasons. But don’t just stop there. Keep going deeper and finding a reason or two beyond your health. Keep asking why until you get a reason that cant go any deeper.

Once you establish your own deep rooted reason (which I like to call your inner why), you will have that clarity that you need in order to take the next step to achieve your goal. You will have that extra motivation and fuel to go out there and do whatever it takes to make your goals a reality.

Tip #3: Keep a water bottle with you at all times.

Every time you have an urge to smoke, you need to find something to occupy your mind and body. Taking a big swig of water is enough for most people to get over than initial urge. In the beginning, this may seem difficult, but if you do it consistently, you will be able to form a new habit.

Tip #4: Hang out with non-smokers.

The main reason that people smoke is because they are surrounded by people who also smoke. You will feel more pressure not to smoke when you are with your non-smoking friends.

There is power in influence through those that you spend the most time with. Psychologists have found that you become like the five closest people that you regularly hang out with. So, make it a daily habit to spend more time with non-smokers than smokers.

Tip #5: Your first target should be 21 days without smoking.

People can develop a new habit if they do something for 21 days in a row. That means after you quit for 21 days straight, it will be more natural to not smoke than to smoke. Just realize that the earliest stage will be the most difficult; that is the most important part of the journey.

Must Quit Smoking Now Or You Will Be Doomed To Pay The Consequences

I am sure you are aware of the health troubles you will be facing as a consequence of long term smoking. Cigarette smoking for a long time leads to breathing problems such as COPD and cancer. Being aware of this should be sufficient to make you quit smoking.

Why is it so tough to stop smoking?

When habits are created, they are not easy to break particularly when we are addicted to something. When our body consumes something that is addictive for long periods and abruptly stops receiving the substance, the organism responds by acting odd or feels dismal. That distressing sensation returns to normal when it gets what it wants or when it has become accustomed to not receiving it after a period of time.

Here is a weird but simple illustration that will make sense.

We all wear underwear and if we get dressed without wearing one, our system becomes uncomfortable. That is because the organism has become used to having it there. By having the unpleasant emotion, the organism is telling us that something is missing and it wants it back. What do we do? We finally give up and put the underwear back on and then we feel better. Addictions are like that but much, much worse.

A person who has end stage COPD is short of breath all the time (worse some times than others), is on oxygen most of the time if not all the time, and coughs a lot phlegm. Don’t take my word for it instead, this is what you should do to find out exactly what I mean by that. Go for a little run for just a few minutes; only if are able to tolerate it. When you stop, you will be short of breath. Well, that’s what you will be experiencing at rest each single minute for the rest of your days when you get older and end up with COPD.
