If you tell others when you will quit smoking, then you will will be more motivated and committed. You want to make sure you are surrounded by people with positive attitudes who want to see you succeed.
You don’t want to tell every single person you know as those with negative attitudes and a pessimistic outlook may actually hold you back. So, choose the people wisely in terms of who to tell when you quit smoking cigarettes.
Tip #2: Know exactly why you want to quit.
Take some time off to reflect on the deep reason that you want to stop smoking. Initially, you may say that you want to quit just for health reasons. But don’t just stop there. Keep going deeper and finding a reason or two beyond your health. Keep asking why until you get a reason that cant go any deeper.
Once you establish your own deep rooted reason (which I like to call your inner why), you will have that clarity that you need in order to take the next step to achieve your goal. You will have that extra motivation and fuel to go out there and do whatever it takes to make your goals a reality.
Tip #3: Keep a water bottle with you at all times.
Every time you have an urge to smoke, you need to find something to occupy your mind and body. Taking a big swig of water is enough for most people to get over than initial urge. In the beginning, this may seem difficult, but if you do it consistently, you will be able to form a new habit.
Tip #4: Hang out with non-smokers.
The main reason that people smoke is because they are surrounded by people who also smoke. You will feel more pressure not to smoke when you are with your non-smoking friends.
There is power in influence through those that you spend the most time with. Psychologists have found that you become like the five closest people that you regularly hang out with. So, make it a daily habit to spend more time with non-smokers than smokers.
Tip #5: Your first target should be 21 days without smoking.
People can develop a new habit if they do something for 21 days in a row. That means after you quit for 21 days straight, it will be more natural to not smoke than to smoke. Just realize that the earliest stage will be the most difficult; that is the most important part of the journey.
